For over a quarter of a century, Fayette County Special Olympians have exhibited grace and strength as they attempt to qualify in a variety of events for the state Special Olympics. On Wednesday at John P. Duda Stadium at Oak Hill High School, local Special Olympic athletes, their teachers and volunteers got up close and personal with strength personified.
Philip Pfister, the 2006 Met-Rx World’s Strongest Man, visited with the athletes and those in attendance at the annual athletic gathering. While signing autographs and posing for photos, he also took time to share some wisdom.
“There are all kinds of strength in the world,” said Pfister. A key to success is to continually strive for improvement “no matter how strong ... you are.”
The main idea, though, is to enjoy yourself.
“(All the work) is not going to do any good if you don’t have fun,” he stressed. |

Have you ever wanted to volunteer but had no idea where to go to find opportunities? Well, search no further. Special Olympics West Virginia needs you from June 6-8 at Laidley Field in Charleston. Although the official deadline has passed, volunteers still are being sought to help make this year's games memorable for the athletes. Whether you choose to cheer on the participants or work on the track, your assistance is needed to make these games happen. "This is a great event. We have 35 county programs from around the state participating," said Linda Quinn, SOWV's Director of Field Services. "That's approximately 900 athletes and 300 to 400 coaches and chaperones. We recruit 800 volunteers from the community to run the different activities." And right now, that quota has not been met.

Bobby Johnson smiled with satisfaction and excited as he crossed the finish line, winning first place in the 800-meter dash Saturday during the Special Olympics at Wheeling Jesuit University. A grassroots movement that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities around the world, Special Olympics is hosted by Wheeling Jesuit University each spring. “I really like walking, so this just feels so good to me,” said Johnson, upon completing the race. “I’m 48 years old, and I like doing this.”
A sea of bright yellow shirts filled the arena as nearly 300 student volunteers from the university and local high schools devoted their time to helping with each competition. The day’s events were coordinated by Brandon Thurber, a junior student from Springdale, Pa., and student Shayla Holenka of Shadyside.

John Corbett has never lived in Hollywood, has never appeared on a hit television comedy on CBS and was not the guy in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." He's not the John Corbett who released a country album a couple of years ago either, but someone did ask him for his autograph - once.
A few years ago, John Corbett, the director of West Virginia's Special Olympics gave a speech in Parkersburg. A man came up with pen and paper to ask for his signature.
Corbett grinned. "He said his wife was a big fan."
This John Corbett has never met the other, although he says he wouldn't mind.
"I think it would be perfect if we could get him to come in for one of our events," he said. "The name recognition alone, I think, would be great for us."
The silver-haired, 42-year-old is bemused by his connection to a famous fellow West Virginian. They look nothing alike and grew up in very different parts of the state. Still, Corbett says he's gotten calls from People and US magazines wanting the Hollywood actor. |
